One East Palo Alto (OEPA) and its partners JobTrain, College Track and El Concilio of San Mateo County are now hiring young people ages 14 to 24 years old for the Sponsored Employment Program (SEP). SEP is a crime prevention initiative that provides summer employment, mentoring and community connectedness opportunities for young people at highest risk in East Palo Alto. Applicants must be residents of East Palo Alto and able to supply proof of the right to work in the United States.
Beginning June 21, 2010 selected applicants will receive three days of intensive job readiness training. After training, the young people will be placed for six weeks at work sites hosted by Employer-Sponsors and then matched with a Community Mentor who will aid and encourage them in becoming productive members of both the community and the work force. The selected young people will work from June 28 through August 6 with a grand graduation celebration on August 9.
Applications can be completed at the OEPA office from 9AM through 6PM, Monday through Friday, 1798-B Bay Road, East Palo Alto.
SEP also offers job opportunities to East Palo Alto college students. Successful candidates will have completed their first year, and can demonstrate excellent communication and computer skills, as well as a passion for seeing youth achieve their full potential. These college students will work for eight weeks as SEP Peer Mentor/Program Assistants. They will facilitate the connections between SEP youth and their adult Community Mentors and assist with general program operations. Interested college students should submit a resume, cover letter, and an essay entitled “Why Role Models Make a Difference” to tmcnair@1epa.org.
